A prominent fishing waterway in Athens is Swan Creek. This is because it flows throughout the city and feeds its water to some local lakes. If you’re planning to have a peaceful fishing trip, head to Swan Creek and go bank fishing. The trails around the creek provide easy access, so you can easily target fish like largemouth bass, spotted bass, white bass, rock bass, black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and freshwater drum. Fish from the creek is usually caught using a variety of permitted bait, especially live bait.
Braly Lake is one of the lakes that’s connected to Swan Creek. The 11-acre lake is home to largemouth bass and white crappie. Another place for those looking for a peaceful day of fishing is Lake Ida. It is another waterway where you’ll find largemouth bass, spotted bass, butterfly peacock bass, and warmouth. You can also use its piers and docks on its east and west banks.
You also have the opportunity to fish from the Alabama Scenic River Trail if you’re in Athens. You’ll come upon the Elk River a few miles west of the city. Head there if you want to experience excellent bass fishing. The river is known for its smallmouth bass fishery but also houses other bass, catfish, bream, and crappie species in its waters. The nearest water access area from Athens to the river is the Elk River Mills Ramp. You can use the county road on the city's northwest side to head there.
Athens is filled with real estate that shows glimpses of what it was like to live in North Alabama and the United States as early as the 1800s. The city has four historic districts which you can tour. Walking tours are done every Saturday morning in April. The Athens-Limestone Community Association operates the site. It is located at 606 Trinity Circle and tells how enslaved people became soldiers and students during the Civil War era. A portion of the fort from that time is still intact. It was built by runaway bondservants who joined the Union Army.
