Berkeley is a humble community on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, brimming with artists, history, science geeks, adventurers, and gastronomists. Nestled north of Alameda County, the city prides itself on its culinary arts and homegrown products. People all over the United States enjoy Berkeley’s bursting flavors and detouring to find new experiences along the way. The city continues to be one of the most socially progressive places in America with its variety of people and cultures.

The east shore community is named after George Berkeley, an Irish bishop and philosopher. When the University of California in Berkeley, the system's oldest campus, was built, the city grew slowly. Berkeley had a small but busy wharf on the west, a busy harbor today at San Francisco Bay’s shore. With a historic pier that stretches 2.5 miles into the San Francisco Bay, although closed to the public, it continues to be a testament to the dock’s long history.

Berkeley Fishing: Alongside the East Bay Community

West of Berkeley is Berkeley Yacht Harbor, where anglers can launch their boats and set out to San Francisco Bay for deep sea fishing and bottom fishing. The city’s proximity to the sea makes perfectly mild and refreshing weather that allows anglers to fish year-round.

San Francisco Bay is Berkeley's primary fishing spot. It offers saltwater fishing for fish species like largemouth bass, striped bass, sanddab, white seabass, leopard shark, white sturgeon, rockfish, California flounder, lingcod, and chinook salmon. Whether with their own boats or in a charter, anglers love to set out to the bay and get a chance at snagging their next trophy game. Many shark species can also be found in San Francisco Bay, with the leopard shark being the most common one. Other shark species include pacific angel shark, brown smooth-hound, broadnose sevengill, and soupfin shark. A common way to catch halibut and great white sturgeon in the bay is bottom fishing, as they both love to stay in murky bottom water. Striped bass are best caught by trolling. Fishing in San Francisco Bay is productive throughout the year. Even in the cold winter months, all the fishing action will certainly keep anglers warm.

To the northern extension of San Francisco Bay, anglers will find themselves in San Pablo Bay. It is blessed with both fresh and saltwater fishing opportunities. The most common game here are chinook salmon, white sturgeon, striped bass, leopard shark, California flounder, shad, albacore tuna, sculpin, rainbow, lake, and brown trout. Largemouth, smallmouth, striped, and spotted bass are also found in the bay. Anglers should bring a windbreaker or wear warm clothing when setting out to San Pablo Bay.
