Sitting in the middle of hills in Massachusetts is Monterey, a tiny city full of history and natural wonder. Its small community is a testament to its simplicity, making it a charming destination for all kinds of people. This rural community is booming with outdoor adventure and recreational opportunities. Once inhabited by the Mahicans, a local native tribe, Monterey is now one of the modest cities in Berkshire County. Monterey was once known for its sawmills, and it continues to preserve its rich history and culture. The beauty of this city reels in visitors from all over Massachusetts. With gorgeous hills as a backdrop to every place of attraction, trips in Monterey will always be warm and memorable.

If you are an angler that likes to do different recreational activities alongside fishing, the lakes in Monterey are perfect for you! Southwest is Lake Buel, a complete nature getaway for leisure purposes such as wildlife viewing, swimming, sailboating, picnicking, and sunset watching. Anglers may enjoy relaxing fishing in the lake’s 196 acres area. Although shoreline access is limited, drift fishing is perfect in the lake. A boat ramp is available for launching access. Trolling is also popular, except when weed gets thick in spring.  Anglers may use colorful rubber worms, floating frogs, and live bait on this occasion. Fish species in Lake Buel are largemouth bass, brown bullhead, bluegill, yellow perch, brown trout, chain pickerel, brook trout, rock bass, pumpkinseed, black crappie, smallmouth bass, northern pike, horned pout, tiger muskie, white perch, white sucker, and golden shiner. The lake is stocked with brook, brown, and rainbow trout in spring and fall. Anglers catch good-sized trout and bass when ice fishing in winter. Wire leader rigs and big baits are best when ice fishing for pike. If you want to avoid the crowd, come to Lake Buel in the early mornings and late nights.

A 275-acre great pond awaits anglers in the central east of Monterey. As it is called, Lake Garfield is an adventure wonderland featuring canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and ice skating in winter are popular outdoor activities in the lake. A small concrete ramp is accessible for all types of boats, so anyone can fish even if shoreline fishing is not possible in the lake. Yellow perch are the most abundant in Lake Garfield. Other game fish include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, white perch, white sucker, yellow perch, bluegill, chain pickerel, rainbow trout, brown trout, pumpkinseed, golden shiner, and rock bass. Jigging for yellow perch when ice fishing is productive in winter. The lake is well balanced, and its fish community prevents small fish from dominating.
