Named after miles of clean, sandy beaches, Long Beach is a city in Los Angeles County located right in the heart of Southern California. Tucked in along the waterfront of the Pacific Ocean, the town boasts a scenic seaside location that makes it an ideal destination for angling. It has also been named one of America’s ‘Most Walkable Cities’ because of its neighborhood layout alongside the sea, offering endless opportunities to those visiting.

With a supreme location and year-round sunshine, Long Beach is one of the best cities where you can seek thrilling experiences and even respite. The city is home to many famous attractions, from the possibly-haunted RMS Queen Mary found at the Port of Long Beach to the historical sites of Ranchos Los Alamitos and Ranchos Los Cerritos, where it has retained Spanish and Mexican era buildings. Long Beach won't disappoint you when it comes to providing a variety of fishing experiences. You can fish from the sea or catch freshwater games in park lakes. You can do it all while being able to feel small-town charm in a big vibrant city.

Long Beach Fishing: A Sparkling Waterfront Gem

Long Beach has got it covered whether you want to fish from beachy shores or out in the sea or whether you want to target freshwater game.

It would be amiss if you didn’t get to go fishing out of the Pacific Ocean, which Long Beach oversees. A great place to start is at Horseshoe Kelp which is known for its great deep-sea fishing and bottom fishing though it’s also a great place to surf cast at the beaches that form the kelp site’s shape. The fish you can catch from the waters include yellowtail, white sea bass, calico bass, giant black sea bass, sand bass, barracuda, bonito, California sheephead, sculpin, halfmoon, whitefish, and treefish. Fly lining live bait is the best way to catch fish from Horseshore Kelp, with live squid, anchovies, sardines, and shrimp being the most popular baits. Fly fishers and light tackle enthusiasts also frequent Belmont Shore beaches. Sportfishers can also go to Belmont Shore Pier, where you can catch rockfish, halibut, corbina, and yellowfin croaker

Palos Verde is another great offshore spot where you and charter boats launch from the city’s downtown area. The cape’s waters are popular for hooking white sea bass and monster calico bass. You can also catch yellowtail, yellowfin, halibut, barracuda, bonito, barred surfperch, leopard shark, as well as freshwater species like largemouth bass and bigmouth buffalo from its reservoir located by Palos Verdes Drive in San Pedro.

Alamitos Bay is a great place to target halibut, corbina, and sharks because of its calm waters. You can fish from its sandy beaches or rocky jetties or launch your boat from the Marina. If you want to target the saltwater game further but stay on land, Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier at Belmont Heights should be on your list.

If you want to take a break from saltwater fishing, go to El Dorado Regional Park, where you can fish from El Dorado Lake and hook freshwater species like largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie, carp as well as stocked rainbow trout. While you’re in Long Beach, a place worth visiting is the Municipal Fly Casting Pool located at Recreation Park in East Long Beach. The clear water and the fishless pond offer anglers an area to practice their fly casting skills while surrounded by an endless stretch of green grass against a backdrop of mountains and palm trees.
