Today, Warren County is still a pretty popular tourist destination. A lot may have changed in terms of access and facilities, but the essence of the county and its main tourist draw, the Lake George area, remains the same. Warren County is still a destination that’s best enjoyed outdoors, communing with nature and enjoying its wondrous gifts, whether by hiking, camping, or fishing.

Warren County Fishing: Productive Lake Fishing

If it’s your first time fishing in the Adirondacks, Warren County is a great place to start. And if you can only fit one water body in your Warren County itinerary, then go big by heading out to Lake George. What makes Lake George a certifiable “Queen of American Lakes” is that it allows you to experience a great variety of fishing. Some of the species you will find in the lake include landlocked salmon, lake trout, northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, brown bullhead, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, rock bass, and black crappie. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation or DEC provides five boat launches to access the lake: Rogers Rock Campground, Northwest Bay Brook, Million Dollar Beach, Hague Town Beach, and Mossy Point. Do note that before you launch your boat, you have to get it registered.

For ice fishing that can last well into March, head to Schroon Lake. It is stocked annually with rainbow trout, brook trout, and brown trout along with landlocked salmon. It is home to native populations of lake trout, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass.

Eager to try some light-tackle fishing? Brant Lake should be on your list. Light-tackle anglers like to target perch and black crappie in this lake, but it also offers some good trout fishing. Apart from panfish and trout, Brant Lake is home to a healthy largemouth and smallmouth bass population.

For a more secluded fishing experience, hike from Brant Lake towards the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. This wilderness area is home to wild populations of lake trout and brook trout, along with stocked brookies, making it a nice fly fishing spot.

For warm water fishery, head southwest of Lake George toward Fourth Lake. And finally, for year-round trout fishing and some more warm water fish, add Lake Luzerne to your bucket list. The main access point to this lake is a DEC public boat launch, but another popular way to access it is via Wayside Beach, where you can get in for free and launch your non-motorized boat.

Learn more about the French and Indian War that inspired The Last of the Mohicans at the Fort William Henry Museum. It is located on the southern edge of Lake George and is easily accessible from the center of the Lake George Village.
