Castle Island is one of the best fishing spots for urban anglers; you can find it to the east of the Pleasure Bay neighborhood. It contains cunner, striped bass, bluefish, winter flounder, summer flounder, black sea bass, starry ray, New Zealand brill, blue skate, tautog, Atlantic bonito, little tunny, and Spanish mackerel. You can use a boat or cast your line from the pier or beaches surrounding the calm, enclosed lagoon.
If you have found yourself on any southern beaches, you’ll have Old Harbor and Dorchester Bay access. You can find cunner, striped bass, largemouth bass, Atlantic rainbow smelt, American eel, rainbow trout, bluefin tuna, bluefish, haddock, Atlantic mackerel, gray triggerfish, summer flounder, winter flounder, European conger, and gulf menhaden in those highly accessible waterways. Carson Beach, L Street Beach, and M Street Beach provide terrific sight fishing, wade fishing, surf casting, and inshore fishing opportunities. If you’re looking for a boat launch area, visit the yacht clubs next to M Street Beach with docks.
In the Seaport District, you’ll get the chance to fish from the famous Boston Fishing Pier. It is perched over the Fort Point Channel and Boston Main Channel, which have striped bass, black sea bass, Atlantic mackerel, chub mackerel, smallmouth bass, and Atlantic cod.
South Boston is home to notable events such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Boston Triathlon, and the New Year’s Day Plunge. The neighborhood is the original home of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which celebrates Irish-American culture and honors Evacuation Day every March. Dorchester Bay is where triathlon participants swim, run, and bike through local streets and shorelines. The New Year’s Day Plunge has been a yearly winter tradition since 1904. Hundreds of people go into the cold waters of Dorchester Bay to celebrate the holiday.
The 22-acre park is a peninsula where Fort Independence was built. It is open to the public; interpretative programs and tours are conducted at the historic landmark. There is also a playground and access to beaches.
