Bayou La Batre sits along the Gulf of Mexico's Mississippi Sound, along the Alabama gulf coast, and is part of Mobile County, Alabama. Joseph Bosarge founded the area in 1786. He received the land via a land grant award from the King of Spain. The area was initially known as "Riviere d'Erbane, but after the French took control of the area and installed a series of artillery at the site, the settlement became known as "Riviere la Batterie" and finally as Bayou La Batre.

A fun fact about Bayou La Batre is that the city was mentioned in the 1994 film Forrest Gump and Winston Groom's book as the home of the character Benjamin Buford. In April 2005, Disney Studios launched a secretly constructed pirate ship, the Black Pearl, out of Bayou La Batre to film the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. The pitch-black vessel was a vast wooden prop built on top of a modern 96-foot-long steel utility boat. The city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina but has continued to soar despite the recent event.
