About Big Slough, TX

Big Slough is a 20-mile freshwater swamp in a prairie and marsh area in Brazoria County, Texas. At 3,000 acres, the slough is considered the state’s smallest official Wilderness Area. It is characterized by slow-moving water that’s almost stagnant, but the area offers a lot of interesting features because of its outstanding biodiversity. The water body has never gone through any significant development or rehabilitation, which made it remain a breeding area for various species, including flora and fauna. The swamp features rare black oak trees and over 200 species of birds. There have also been sightings of coyotes and bobcats here, as well as cottonmouths and rattlesnakes, especially in the still waters or underneath the decaying wood logs.

Most of the water body’s area lies in the floodplain of the Neches River that forms eleven miles out of the twelve-mile eastern boundary. The main watercourse is situated in a partly abandoned channel of the river. Along with the peculiar diversity that the area comprises, it is also rich in aquatic life and is a great breeding ground for channel catfish. Some parts of the slough are also considered alligator magnets.

The area is certainly a great avenue for hiking, fishing, and camping, but the slough’s limited amenities are not for everyone. There are no established campsites, trash cans, toilets, and running water available. The winter months are the most ideal times for visiting the area, when most of the unfriendly inhabitants are dormant, especially mosquitoes and alligators. Make sure to bring a great supply of bug spray with you.
