Whitingham Fishing: A Mountainous Fishing Haven

Whether you’re going onshore or offshore freshwater fishing in Whitingham, you’re surely offered breathtaking views while in Whitingham with farms, mountains, and forests surrounding rivers and lakes.

The meandering lake of Harriman Reservoir, also known as Lake Whitingham, is probably the best place to start fishing in the town because of its vastness and accessibility. It’s the largest body of water situated entirely within the state. In its cold and clear waters, you can hook species such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, lake trout, Atlantic salmon, yellow perch, rock bass, pumpkinseed, and chain pickerel. You can fish from the shore and do some baitcasting, spinning or fly fishing or fishing by boat on the almost 10-mile open water. The watershed also makes for a great ice fishing spot during the winter. Whitingham lake is also a popular place for boating, paddling, and swimming, with its waters going right up against the rise of the Green Mountains, offering a breathtaking view no matter what activity one does in its waters.

You can find a much smaller lake to the east of Harriman Reservoir called Lake Clara, which is another great spot if you’re targeting bass. You’ll find another popular fishing body called Sadawga Pond if you head down from there. You can find fish like largemouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, panfish, channel catfish, northern pike, and bullhead in its waters which offer shoreline or boat angling.

If you’re a bit weary from fishing in lakes and ponds, head to the west and fish from Deerfield River, where wild and stocked trout can be found throughout its stretch. Other favorite targets include smallmouth bass, walleye, and shad. You can also find white sucker, American eel, common carp, fallfish, landlocked salmon, largemouth bass, northern pike, black bullhead, rock bass, yellow perch, muskellunge, rainbow smelt, and crappie in its waters.

If you’ve found yourself in the east, you can head to Ryder Pond and Jacksonville Pond, where you can catch chain pickerel, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass, carp, black bullhead, bluegill, and red drum
