Located in Florida’s southwest by the Gulf Coast, Punta Gorda is a historic small city that is the county seat of Charlotte County. The city is easily accessed by I-75 and lies on the Peace River’s south bank and Charlotte Harbor Estuary’s eastern shore. Punta Gorda is bordered by the unincorporated communities of Charlotte Park, Solana, Charlotte Harbor, Port Charlotte, and Harbour Heights. Its name in Spanish means ‘fat point’.

Punta Gorda was the home of the Calusa people before European explorers and settlers arrived. Hurricane Charley tore through the city in 2004, damaging many infrastructures but provided the opportunity for revitalization of both the historic downtown and the waterfront. From the first part of the 21st century up to the present day, Punta Gorda has been consistently growing and improving, offering many natural attractions, waterside activities, and leisurely walks along the Harborwalk and at the Fishermen's Village. It has also restored its historic district beautifully, featuring huge royal palm-lined streets, tin-roofed homes with wide verandas from the old Florida era as well as brick lanes, street lamps, and benches that retain an old-Florida atmosphere. Along with fishing, Punta Gorda is known for its rich culture and art scene as well as its status as a premier destination for sports and recreation, earning the title of being the best small city in airport connectivity by the 2020 America’s Best Small Cities report.

Punta Gorda Fishing

Maritime and coastal habitats that surround Punta Gorda accommodate over 600 species of birds, fish, and marine wildlife. The city’s ecosystem is managed along with state and federal scientists to indulge in expansive uses. Anglers looking to visit the city will find it a treasure of a spot for inshore and offshore fishing.

The most popular place to start fishing in Punta Gorda is in Charlotte Harbor which is described as the city’s ‘front door’ and ‘Thin-Water Paradise’. The latter nickname was earned due to the estuary’s friendly waters, great for small and medium-size cruisers, yachts and charter boats. A variety of saltwater sportfish can be caught in the harbor including tarpon, redfish, cobia, snook, barracuda, spotted sea trout, and grouper. A huge attraction for anglers there is tarpon fly fishing, in which the highest-paying tarpon tournament is held right in the Boca Grande Pass, an inlet that joins Charlotte Harbor to the Gulf of Mexico and is situated in the city that is known as the ‘Tarpon Capital of the World’. The harbor also offers opportunities for bottom fishing, spearfishing, dead-bait fishing, and deep sea fishing. Cobia and grouper are typically found on wrecks, bridges, reefs, and rock structures while barracuda can be caught by spinning or casting as these fish tend to stay in shallow areas hunting small baitfish. Snook and redfish love to sail the islands around the harbor looking for food so find areas without much boat traffic. Sea trout frequent shallow grass flats when it’s warm and move to deeper waters when it gets colder, making them a great species to target inshore and offshore year-round.

Another popular fishing destination is the general Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach vacation destination which is located on the Charlotte Harbor Gulf Island Coast. It offers both saltwater and freshwater fishing opportunities in which anglers can either opt to fish by boat or cast a line from a dock, a pier, a beach, or a river bank. The area’s waters support a vast array of species such as snook, grey snapper, largemouth bass, Gulf flounder, goliath grouper, redfish, crevalle jack, cobia, bluegill, and Spanish mackerel. Boat ramps and dock access are riddled throughout the area with full-service marinas and charter services easily accessible. Anglers can employ their surf casting skills at the beach or do some drift fishing in the area’s lakes or rivers. The destination also supports the Coastal Conservation Association Florida and its restocking initiatives as well as its efforts to run fishing tournaments like the CCA Florida STAR, a family-friendly saltwater tournament held all summer long. People can also enjoy paddling through the miles of Blueway Trails that go through the area.

For those looking to stay in Punta Gorda longer and are keen on spending some time in the sea, Pine Island Sound is a great place to spend hours or days fishing for species like redfish, snook, speckled trout, permit, bonito, bluefish, and flounder. It’s an excellent spot for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Fish there gather at the sound’s seagrass beds, oyster beds, mangroves, grass residences, canals, seaside fronts, passes, and synthetic reefs.

Freshwater anglers can visit Webb Lake or the Marl Ponds Fish Management Area where they can hook fish like largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish and tilapia. Non-motorized boats can be used in Webb Lake but anglers like to just fish from the banks and use bait there for a relaxing fishing experience. On the other hand, anglers in Marl Ponds often do some drift fishing, trolling, still fishing, and fly fishing. The best way to find fish at the ponds is to go near cliffs, gradual shores,  steep shore banks, inlets, and outlets.

Punta Gorda hosts several fishing tournaments every year. Summer months are especially busy with The Flatsmasters Tournament Series 4 and the Sweetheart Couples Tournament where anglers can compete with their partners. During the spring, the city also hosts the Junior Flatsmasters Fishing Tournament, great for young anglers to test out and hone their skills.
